Perhaps best known to audiences for his role opposite Robert De Niro
and Meryl Streep in 1978's Academy Award-winning film "The Deer Hunter,"
John Savage has continued to work among Hollywood's best and brightest
filmmakers.
Born and raised in suburban New York, Savage made his professional stage
debut at age 14 in an Off-Broadway production of "The Drunkard." He
went on to star in the acclaimed Broadway production "Fiddler on the
Roof." Upon graduating from high school, he earned a full scholarship
to New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and by 1973 had moved
to California to make his feature film debut in "Steelyard Blues" opposite
Jane Fonda.
He continued his career in Hollywood on such films as "Hair," "The Onion
Field," "Inside Moves," Oliver Stone's "Salvador," Francis Ford Coppola's
"The Godfather III," and Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing." In 1988,
Savage left Hollywood and moved to South Africa, where he became involved
with the anti-apartheid movement, worked with Nelson Mandela, and shot
footage for television news stations. In 1992, he worked on Spike Lee's
"Malcolm X" as the Production Manager in South Africa, before moving
back to the US in 1994.
His recent film credits include "Message in a Bottle," Spike Lee's "Summer
of Sam," "The Thin Red Line," "White Squall" and "The Crossing Guard."
Savage's television credits include starring roles in the TV movies
"The Virginians," "The Jack Bull," Oprah Winfrey's "Before Women Had
Wings" and Tom Clancy's "Op Center," as well as appearances in episodes
of "The X-Files," "Star Trek: Voyager," "The Outer Limits," "Walker
Texas Ranger" and "Tales From the Crypt."
